NCLB Debate

Lawmakers overhauling NCLB? To what extent?

Pittsburgh, PA- February 25, 2015-EDUCATION WEEK reports that debates are ongoing in the US House of Representatives regarding the overhaul of NCLB.
One of the most debated questions concerns the testing requirements. Currently, the bill would continue to require testing of reading and math skills in grades 3-8 and once in high school. Science testing would continue to be in 3 different grade levels.  Some members of the House prefer to replace the current testing schedule and have all tests be in just 3 different grade levels. One of the amendments garnering the most attention comes from Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, D-Ore., who proposed to allow states to use federal dollars to audit the number and rigor of tests they give, eliminating any tests that are either redundant or of low quality.
Most lawmakers like the annual testing regimen, which they feel is important to identify achievement gaps between subgroups of students. Questions still exist, however, with all questions and scores coming back to one point:  accountability.  How will data from tests be used, and just who decides what and how the consequences /rewards for under- and overachieving schools and teachers will be?
Neil Haley and Dede Rittman are available to speak on the pros and cons of NCLB and many other topics regarding Education, including, but not limited to: inclusion, dealing with parents, teacher burnout, Common Core, the value of teaching empathy in schools, technology in the classroom, dealing with ADD/ADHD students in the mainstreamed classroom, accommodating special needs students, importance of administrative support for classroom teachers, teacher/student relationships, classroom behavior and discipline coaching/directing/activities outside the classroom.
